Introducing Monocle

Inventive Labs just announced the 1.0 version of their new Javascript based ebook reader. It only supports Epub (that's not encumbered by DRM) but even so, I think it's cool. Now you can add an ebook reader to any webpage just by adding a few lines of Javascript. You can find out more here.

I'm really surprised that they managed to do it in Javascript. I've worked with it before, and one of it's weaknesses is opening files. I've been toying with an online reader, only I was thinking about using PHP.

P.S. They're going to be at SWSX next week. Tell them I said hello.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
