Books taking on all comers

The Universal Powers That Be must like to curl up with a good book. How else to explain the continued existence of the book publishing industry, against all odds.

Despite having one of the more fragile business models in existence, publishers continue to get squeezed from all directions: From book retailers, who get to return unsold merchandise, a precipitous rise in self-publishing and a steady incursion onto their turf from digital giants like Google Inc. and now Apple with the iPad ereader.
