New Android E-reader from Shenzhen Switek

Shenzhen Switek is a 5 year old consumer electronics company based in Shenzhen, China. (FYI: Shenzhen is a city in China just across the border from Hong Kong.) This was their first US trade show, and they brought their 2 ereader models with them.

The first is your standard Netronix model. Switek is calling it the EB82, and even though this model is quite common, they chose it so they could get a jump start on developing their own firmware.

They also are developing their own unique ereader, the EB86. This ereader has a 6" E-ink screen, FBReader, and has an SD card slot, headphone jack, and support for multiple languages. The EB86 model on display was a dummy, unfortunate. But I did get to hold it, and I think this could be an interesting ereader.

Shenzhen Switek expects to have the Eb86 ready to ship next month. The early model will come with a Linux firmware. There will be an Android firmware later, but it's still under development.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
