Irex files for bankruptcy protection

Irex Technologies, maker of the Iliad, DR1000s, and the DR800SG, filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday in the Netherlands. According to my source, the reported cause was an inability to secure new financing and that last year's launch of the DR800SG was delayed past the Christmas season. They're claiming that the DR800SG was delayed by the FCC, and I don't believe them.

The original announced US release date for the DR800SG was late October, that much is true. But I think it was actually delayed because the firmware was not complete. I got my hands on the DR800SG  at CES, and it was by no means ready to be sold.

Software development was not something that Irex did well. Then again, from personal experience I can tell you they were also weak in the areas of marketing and customer service.

P.S. There is some dispute about whether the DR800SG I saw at CES had the latest firmware. People have shown me videos dated in December and November that show a more capable device. I don't see how it matters, though. If the latest firmware wasn't stable enough to send, Irex had a problem with software development. If they sent the wrong one, then that was a marketing snafu.

Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
