More details on EC Media’s e-reader – the Wink

Today was the official launch of the Wink , India's first native ereader. I first covered this device about a month ago, but back then all I knew was some of the hardware details (5 models with screens from 5" to 9.7"). Now I have more info that I can share on WinkStore and Winkwire, EC Media's digital newspaper.

The WinkStore is where EC Media will be selling the Wink ereader. It's also their ebookstore, with approximately 200k titles from major publishers (like Penguin, HarperCollins, OUP) now in 15 languages. But you will also be able to buy the Wink at Croma, an Indian electronics megastore. EC Media have 2 models in stock at the WinkStore. Both are 6" Kindle clones with Wifi, TTS, an SD card slot. One of the models has 3G.

Winkwire is rather interesting. It's a digital newspaper, but rather than start a media unit EC Media have partnered with IANS, India's largest independent news service.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."

  1. Isn’t the Infibeam Pi India’s first indigenous ereader? Is the Wink made in India?
