New 7″ e-reader now available (video)

I'm rather at a lost on how to start this post. This is a curious ereader. I found it twice in a single day, only under different brands. (This is probably going to happen a lot over the next 6 months.) It has a 7" LCD screen, 2 sets of page turn buttons on the right of the screen, 0-9 on the left, and a joystick below. I'm not sure who made it, but I'd guess based on the buttons and the interface shown in the video that this is a Rockchip design. I've been told that this CPU manufacturer have been developing firmware for devices based on their chips.  This might or might not be true.

It supports EPUB, PDF, TXT, FB2, PDB, HTML, as well as Adobe DE DRM. Well, one version supports the DRM; the other version might not. Video and audio support includes AVI, DIVX, MP4, RM, RMV, MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and OGG.

You can buy it at Meritline as the iView for $105, or you can buy it as the Smart eBook Reader  for $159.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."

  1. This looks very much like the Hiteker HDB-107 E, the reader that Bol.com started selling last week in the Netherlands with an introductory offer of 10 e-books plus this reader for EUR 99. They sell the reader now for EUR 149.
