Kobo appoints new head of Pub. & Ind. Rel. for Europe

Note that you don't see Sony hiring someone for this position, or B&N. (Or Amazon, but then Amazon are the 800 lbs gorilla and can simply wait for publishers to come to them.) BTW, I don't see that it's mentioned in the press release but I believe Pieter Swinkels is not anyone's replacement. This position has been open since Kobo created it it some months ago and he is the first to fill it. Yep, Kobo is  expanding. From the press release: Global eReading service Kobo Inc. is thrilled to announce the appointment of Pieter Swinkels as Kobo's new Director of Publisher and Industry Relations for Europe.

Swinkels brings more than 12 years of experience in the publishing industry, most recently as Associate Publisher of Netherlands publishing company De Bezige Bij and Publisher of Cargo. In his new role at Kobo, Swinkels will be responsible for driving forward Kobo's ambitious expansion into the European market.

"We are thrilled to welcome Pieter to the Kobo team – he has a reputation throughout Europe and around the world for being an innovative, forward-thinking publisher," said Michael Tamblyn, Executive Vice President of Content, Sales and Merchandising for Kobo. "His long-time passion for the publishing and eReading, combined with his in-depth experience and strong European relationships, makes him the perfect person to present Kobo's global eReading service to the European publishing community."

In his role at Kobo, Swinkels will be responsible for acquiring new titles and new publishers across Europe and building strong, collaborative relationships with the European publishing community. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Netherlands currently have the highest European Kobo user counts, but the company is quickly expanding its audience in Spain, Portugal and Italy – especially as partners continue to distribute their devices worldwide.

"Kobo Inc. is known internationally for its passion and dedication to delivering the best possible reading experience to customers," said Swinkels. "I'm so excited to bring my experience to Canada and become a part of that mission. "

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."

  1. Hrm. Does this mean that Kobo will carry books from Elib.se? And will the prices be in dollar? And will their discounts work? ( If that happens, you will hear my happy shout in the US! :D)

    I guess time will tell.
