New firmware available for Sony Reader

The developers at EbookApps have announced an update for their alternative firmware for the Sony PRS-505 and PRS-300. Improvements include:

  • Added applications: Chess, Calculator, Sudoku, Minesweeper, Shultz table.
  • Ukrainian localization. (We need your further help with UI localizations!)
  • Improvements in Fonts Settings.
  • Minor changes and bug-fixes.
  • For developers: SDK for applications development for our firmware is coming soon!

I tried their firmware some time back and it frankly wasn't very good. That was an early firmware, though, and even then I thought that they were working towards something useful.I think you should try their firmware for yourself. Installation is easy and if you don't like it simply delete it and reboot. No harm will come to your Sony Reader. In fact, nothing actually gets installed. Their firmware runs from Flash memory and you can switch back and forth easily.

Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
