Mcsweeney’s iOS app updated

Mcsweeney's updated their iOS app yesterday; v2.0 adds a new interface, more exclusive content, Twitter integration, and more whiz-bang for your buck. The app looks interesting, but what caught my eye was the business model.

Each week you’ll receive exclusive multimedia — stories, films, readings, interviews, art - plus new humor pieces from our website everyday. Each week you’ll receive exclusive multimedia - stories, films, readings, interviews, art - plus new humor pieces from our website every day. Your app purchase gets you six months of weekly Small Chair content, plus semi-eternal delivery of the website material, plus deluxe access to our classy ebook store. We’ll use Push Notifications to let you know each time a new piece is ready.

So for $5 you get a new piece of content each week (for 6 months) that won't be available on the McSweeney's website. You also have access to McSweeney's other digital content, too. Consider this: how many people buy one issue of a digital magazine and don't buy a second issue? McSweeney's may have found a way to tap into that single issue market without paying as much as say, Wired Magazine spend each month.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader:"I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
