NookColor hacks now being sold on Ebay – Avoid?

This past weekend I learned about the latest beginner's shortcut that's being sold on Ebay. Starting at around $60, you can buy a microSD card with the latest NookColor hacks installed. You can find everything from a basic root hack to the hacked Froyo update.

Will Shanklin over at Android Police think it's a ripoff. I'm not us sure I agree.

You see, I've seen stuff like this for sale for years now. It doesn't bother me anymore than if someone wants to buy an existing WOW character rather than develop their own. Will is right that this isn't all that hard to do, but even so it's still beyond the abilities of some users.

But I do think that most of the sellers are ridiculously overcharging.

  1. Eh. I had to pay someone near $40 to put the LifeDrive OS files on a CF for me (I supplied the CF) a few years ago. I just couldn’t get the damn winimage or wtf software it was to work for me at all.

Yeah. it’s common amongst opensource fans or devs to feel gutted when someone starts making a killing with their efforts. I recall an irate developer of jbidwatcher feeling cheated when someone was selling loads of his software on ebay.

The thing is i don’t think anything in gpl precludes someone from selling opensource softwaware and making money off it.

on the other hand it highlights the fact that most geeks and devs do not have good business sense and so they feel sad when they see someone else monetizing from their sweat.
