Zinio have been down for a couple weeks now – Did you notice?

For about the past 2 weeks, Zinio, a digital magazine distributor and retailer, have been having trouble with their servers.  The earliest report on Zinio's blog refer to delivery issues, and that post was published on 1 March.  Since then there have been about 7 or 8 more posts in which the service has been up, down, up again, and down again. Right now Zinio are working to fix the problem, and they'll probably have it resolved soon.

Here's the interesting part: No one noticed. I knew about it, but that was only because I follow their blog (and just about everyone else, too).  But it wasn't until today when one frustrated user started poking various blogs, which lead eBookNewser to write about the problem.

If you're wondering why I didn't mention this sooner, it's because I didn't catch it until about 5 days in. No one else had noticed at that point, and that intrigued me more than the problem itself. I was thinking that the longer it went unnoticed, the less Zinio mattered as a digital magazine distributor. That's a little mean, but you have to admit there's some truth to the idea.

If Amazon or Apple had trouble, everyone would notice and report it  right away. But no one noticed Zinio.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader:"I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."

  1. You’re absolutely right… I wonder if mashable caught wind of it.

  2. I didn’t and I get a bunch of mags through their website. But then I only tend to go there once I know news issues are actually out.

  3. They aren’t fixed yet. They delivered all 10 of my missing Sporting News issues on Saturday, delivered Sunday’s issue but again are having problems and I haven’t gotten Monday’s issue yet. They say it’s late, so they haven’t fixed there problems.
