Viewsonic gTablet gets an update

So the best $300 tablet on the market got an update today. The update is available as an OTA download, so turn on the tablet and you should be prompted to download and install the update. It added a number of improvements:

  • Adobe Flash support
  • External docking station support
  • USB keyboard and mouse support
  • International cities available in Weather
  • Spanish and French language support
  • Energy saving screen lock

The Viewsonic gTablet is running Android v2.2 on a 10.1" (1024×600) capacitive touchscreen, and it has a dual core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 512MB RAM, 16GB Flash storage, a microSD card slot, Wifi, Bluetooth, and a 1.3MP camera on the front.

As you can see from the specs this is a pretty capable tablet. But the original firmware is crap, so I'm going to try the update and then possibly switch over to one of the hacked ones. There's even a new firmware that overclocks the CPU to 1.6GHz. (But I'm going to wait a bit before I try it.)

  1. I have been thinking of buying on of these mainly for pdf reading. 7″ works for most other reading for me. I especially like the battery life that has been reported, although 1.6 pounds seems tad heavy based on my brief holding of the first IPAD.

In any case I will probably wait for the Coby Kyros or updated Arnova since I suspect they will cheaper and lighter, albeit slower and of cheaper build quality.

  2. So why haven’t you done any videos of this wonder tablet or any detailed writeup?

  3. @elmonica Yes. Chalk it up to a brain fart. Carry on.
