The iriver Story HD got a firmware patch this morning

Google's ebook reader got an update last night, and it got another one early this morning. It's been less than 24 hours since it was released and it's already being patched. Yep, it's a Google product. Mike Cane noticed that early this morning iriver uploaded a new patch for the Story HD. It has a firmware number of 1.10, and it's not a complete firmware. It's just a replacement for the language support. You can the update and instructions here. But that doesn't matter because I can't use it. I'm pretty sure that that update is for the Wifi-less model.

Last night my Story HD was updated over the air. I got the update the first time I turned on the Wifi. I can't see any changes, and the new firmware number is 1.17.

I watched the update as it downloaded to my Story HD, and the files were actually smaller than the update available online. I'm not sure that it's the same update, but I do know that I'm not going to risk borking a functional device.

  1. I’m interested to see if they ever give it Search. Are the books in ePub format? Or are they doing something like Kobo and B&N do, to avoid the Adobe DRM vig?

  2. The free ebooks that came with it are in Epub and PDF. I don’t know yet about the paid ebooks, but I bet they’re downloaded in Adobe Epub as well.

  3. Disgusting. I was waiting for a good upgrading not a language patch.

  4. I updated to 1.10, and now I can’t read my bought or borrowed copyrighted books any more. “Can’t open doc” it what it says on the display. I’ve seen that there are a few others stating they have the same problem. I have yet to get an answer from support and on our Swedish site it is no longer possible to download the firmware patch. I hope they will have a new patch soon. Beware!
