Next iriver e-reader to use zForce touchscreen

Neonode announced today that they'd just signed up another ebook reader maker. L&I Electronics,  a joint venture between LG and iriver, will be using Neonode 's unique touch screen tech on their next ebook reader.

There are no details on what the device will look like, but I'd say that this is a sign that iriver finally figured out that they aren't very good at making Kindle clones. The next iriver ereader will likely be a touch screen only device (like the iriver Cover Story). That would put them a step behind Kobo and B&N,  as well as 2 steps behind Sony. I'm surprised it took them this long.

One thing that always bugged me about Kindle clones is that no one ever copied the important features; only the hardware was copied. The truly important features were the note taking, email, and other software abilities. In fact, all too often the keyboard was barely used, and on most Kindle clones it was used so little that there was no real reason to have it in the first place.

Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
