Russian ebook market tripled in first half of 2011

And you thought the US market was growing, hah. LitRes, the leading aggregator and distributor of ebooks in the Russian market, have just released some startling figures.

LitRes currently offers over 50,000 Russian language titles, and they also sell ebooks and ebook readers. They’ve seen 3 times as many sales in the first 6 months of 2011 as first half of 2010. Direct sales to consumers also doubled in that time, and LitRes have seen their new Android app downloaded 10 thousand times since it was uploaded to the Android Market.

That growth is actually faster than in the US. I only have approximate figures for the first 5 months of 2011, but the US market slightly more than doubled in size.

Of course, we don’t really know what the US figures are; here why.
