Harry Potter Ebooks Delayed Until 2012

That’s the word from Pottermore Insider, the official blog. The Harry Potter ebooks won’t be making the original planned release date this fall. Pottermore, the official online community for Harry Potter fans, was due to launch the Pottermore Shop in October or November. Unfortunately, it’s been delayed because the developers want to focus getting the rest of the site up and running.

Finally, the Pottermore Shop, which will sell the Harry Potter eBooks and digital audio books, will now open in the first half of 2012, in order to allow us to focus on our first priority: opening Pottermore to as many people as possible and making the experience as good as it can be.

There’s over a million registered users on Pottermore as of yesterday, so it’s easy to understand the delay. The site has been so active that some users have complained of speed problems, not being able to connect at all, and other issues.

But on the upside, I also just learned that Pottermore will be opening up to the public at the end of October. Registration will be enabled in stages, and limited number of the tens of millions ofย  HP fans around the world will be added in intervals. I guess they’re trying to make sure we don’t all show up at once and crash the site.

There’s no sign yet on whether the Kindle editions will also be delayed, and to be honest they might be released separately. It’s not clear how Amazon are cooperating, just that you’ll be able to buy Harry Potter ebooks for the Kindle.

I’m waiting to hear back from Amazon, but at this point I do not expect to get a statement. It’s better for them to remain silent than offer bad news.

Wow. Sony just can’t catch a break, can they? There goes their big Christmas for the Reader!

Oh, it shouldn’t make any difference.
Sony wasn’t going to have a big Christmas anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Seriously, they can still sell the limited edition with the pack-in voucher for SORCEROR’S STONE. The Sony faithful that are going to buy it won’t mind waiting six-nine months to redeem the voucher. Besides, Sony now has a timed exclusive on their hands; they will be the only vendor on the planet able to sell a Harry Potter ebook (vouchers). ๐Ÿ˜€

Shouldn’t be a problem, as long as they don’t have a million of the limted editions j a warehouse somewhere.
