A Brief Review of the Polaroid PMID 702C Android Tablet

Polaroid seems to be trying to start a tablet of the month club. The reason I say that is they keep releasing new tablets, all of them cheap and all of them launched with little fanfare.

The PMID702C, which I found last weekend at BigLots for $90, is no exception to the quip. It’s another sub-$100 7″ Android tablet, and like its predecessor the PMID701i it’s running the latest version of Android on a 1GHz CPU.

But unlike its predecessors, this tablet also comes with a VGA webcam in addition to the graphics chip, g-sensor, 4GB Flash storage, microSD card slot, Wifi, capacitive touchscreen, and a single speaker.

Hardware

The PMID702c has a much less blocky design than Polaroid’s earlier models. It’s thinner and has a slightly curved back. It’s also lacking the home, menu, and back buttons (which this version of Android no longer requires). All the buttons and ports are along the one short edge (headphone jack, microSD card slot, USB, volume buttons, power buttons). The one button you see on the face acts as the home button, and the camera is centered above the screen.

Appearances aside, this pretty much is the same tablet as Polaroid’s previous models.  The only real difference I can see between this tablet and the PMID701i is the VGA webcam. It’s frankly not any good, so I don’t see it as a reason to recommend the later model.

Apps

This tablet ships with the same broad set of apps as on previous Polaroid tablets, so you should be good to go with just about anything you want to do, right out of the box. It doesn’t have an app store, but there is a link to make it easy to install the Amazon Appstore. I did so, and after I logged into my account I installed the Kindle app. It works.

I also installed Angry Birds Space, and performance and load time was good. The tablet was reasonably responsive (no lag) and didn’t misinterpret any of my presses.  Youtube worked without a hitch, and other owners have reported that Adobe Flash installed just fine.

But not all apps worked. For example, Netflix installed but I couldn’t log in to my account.  I suspect that is because of the added security this app requires.

Android Market

As good as the Amazon Appstore sometimes is, I have come to rely on some apps that Google won’t release elsewhere like Google Reader, Gmail, and so on. So I did what I always do with a new tablet, try to take over the world. I pulled up my usual instructions for an easy Android Market install and gave it a go.

The process went without a hitch nor even a hiccup. I have Android Market installed, and I got the paid copy of Aldiko as well as the Google apps I need. All the apps installed just fine.

You can find the instructions here.

Battery

I didn’t get a chance to test this app on a trip, which is my preferred method to stress the battery life. But I did note that battery life on standby was measured in several days, which is fairly good for a budget Android tablet. I would estimate the battery life to last around 5 hours with Wifi on and steady use.

Opinion (One Week In)

I’m going to have to agree with the early adopters who have already posted in the comments. This tablet isfunctions well for its price and has decent build quality. This is a very nice device and I feel it’s an excellent value for the price. So long as you don’t expect more than a basic tablet, this one should do you well.

Just picked it up at Big Lots for $89 through in a 8gb micro SD card for $8. Everything seems to works pretty well. I agree the camera is pretty basic compared to some of the amazing smartphone cameras I’ve witnessed recently, but what do you expect. I also loaded up the google app store as well as amazon’s. I downloaded flash 11 from the google app store without any problem. I’ve had an android 2.3 smartphone for over a year but I couldn’t wait to get my hands on an android 4.0 system. For $89 this turns out to have been a no-brainer. I dig it!

brenda d June 11, 2012 um 11:13 am

how do i download flash 11? I cant even get vidcos to play on youtube. I just returned the PMID701i tablet to get the PMID702c tablet because of the camera. I have downloaded many apps so far, I think this was a good investment.

Jacquie June 11, 2012 um 2:57 pm

This is probably a very stupid question. I just bought this tablet this weekend as well, and so far I love it. My only question is this: Since the camera is forward facing, how on earth do you take pictures with it except to turn it around towards what you want to take a picture of and then since theirs no viewfinder, how do you see what you are trying to take a picture of? I must be missing something, b/c I don’t get it beyond that. Please reply! Thank you!

Skee June 11, 2012 um 7:11 pm

Front facing cameras are usually used for video chat. I dunno, maybe get a mirror lol.

Reg December 19, 2012 um 3:42 pm

Turn your back to the object, and shoot over your shoulder.

Wanda June 26, 2013 um 12:13 am

There’s got to be a better way.

Wanda June 26, 2013 um 12:12 am

Did you ever figure it out? I just bought one and was wondering the same thing.

Robin June 12, 2012 um 6:21 pm

I have the same problem! Hulu won’t play without Flash player but when I try anything on Google apps it tells me I haven’t accessed it thru the white shopping bag icon. I don’t have that icon. Just android apps icon. I installed amazon apps store and it doesnt have any versions of flash? Meanwhile everything I want is on google (which I’m logged into) but wont allow downloads of apps. A review I watched on youtube said the 702C IS NOT compatible with google apps so you have to use amazon but you (Andrew) said you downloaded Google apps. I’m new to tablets but I’ve seen several others who can’t download from google? Any suggestions from anyone out there? Bueller? any help is appreciated and thanks! Other than that, this is a nice $89 tablet I got yesterday from big lots. How do I get google apps downloaded and working so I can install Flash player? Thanks 🙂

I have a Pandigital Star. CanI get the Android Market on it bt using the same instructions?

Tacoma guy October 13, 2012 um 2:24 pm

i bought the poloroid pmid702c from biglots a few weeks ago, discovered it would not accept android apps unless flashed so i flashed it and installed google play, this took three hrs to figure out.. then after a rd trip the charge cable broke off inside without much abuse or use.. so now its worthless.. I would not buy another polaroid tablet even if it was free, after taking the time to install all my apps and passwords and music now its dead two weeks out of box.. get real polaroid your tablets are for consumers and kids and if an adult cant handle taking care of it how can a 12 year old

Zach November 17, 2012 um 2:03 pm

By the sound of you, a 12 yr old CAN take care of it better than you.

I downloaded google chrome tomy Uniden Tablet,Android 4.0. Itworks beautifully, with no glitches like Opera & Browser. I haven’t been able to use GooglePlay yet, but I did download Amazon, 1Mobile Market, Opera, Chrome, without any problems. I did try taking pictures & video Saturday
niight.
have to learn to quitcovering the camera ith my fingers. Sound came out good, video not so good. Learning keyboard, wish I could make it international-Spanish-so I can translate more accurately. Bought mine at BigLots for $59.88.

wakawaka June 10, 2012 um 11:34 pm

Just curious if there is any cheap way to add GPS to this tablet.

sharon b. June 11, 2012 um 7:43 am

I also just bought the PMID702c at Big Lots yesterday…my first tablet. This may sound like a dumb question, but since i’m completely new to ANY smartphone/tablet/apps…how do i "log out" of my amazon account so my kids won’t be able to download any more apps from the amazon appstore onto this tablet? from the tablet, i went to the amazon website (amazon.com) and "logged out"(?) of my account, or so i thought, but we’re still able to download apps (free and/or paid ones)…help! is there a way "disconnect" my amazon account from the tablet once it’s been "linked up"? Thanks!!!

Nate Hoffelder June 11, 2012 um 9:02 am

You could delete the credit card that is listed with your Amazon account. It’s a nuisance, but it would do the job.

brenda d June 11, 2012 um 11:09 am

I scrolled to the bottom of the page and their was a sign out link to click on

Paul Alger June 14, 2012 um 1:19 pm

You should beat the kids if they download stuff on your account.. Don’t blame the tablet!

MD Recruiter August 30, 2012 um 10:10 am

While beating them works on the short term, they will somehow live to download again…….trust me I have considered this option. (I have an 11 yo and 13 yo)
Get a pre-paid card, can’t spend what’s not there or considering talking to them……..
For the price ($89.00 @ Big lots) this is a great value, especially for a novice, entrance into the tablet world.

Laura June 12, 2012 um 12:20 pm

Hi,
I bought the 702c on Friday and was able to set up the Android Market and download a bunch of apps (when I followed the steps I found here) but when I went to the pre-loaded amazon appstore and tried to download apps the downloads started and then a message came up saying I have to add a credit card to the account and to "click here," which I did. Up came my usual amazon.com account I’ve had with amazon for years, complete with my credit card info. I signed in and tried to download apps again (as that message had said to do) but the the same thing happened over and over again. What am I doing wrong?

Thomas June 15, 2012 um 9:30 pm

Did you turn on one-click ordering in your amazon account?

Laura June 16, 2012 um 8:38 pm

Yes, I did, but I put my home number into it, as I don’t use my cell phone except for emergencies, as it costs me 25 cents a minute or part of a minute to use it. Isn’t that what I was supposed to do?

Amanda June 20, 2012 um 12:07 am

You have to set up the account through the settings in the app store not where it says click here. I had the same problem. Just use your regular account that you have with amazon but do it through the app settings.

Pete August 13, 2012 um 11:06 am

I had a similar problem with my Amazon account and not being able to download apps from the appstore. I found that my Amazon account had multiple credit cards and shipping addresses (for work purposes), once I deleted the unwanted credit card numbers and addresses and went down to just one of each, I was able to download apps.

Vickee June 13, 2012 um 7:23 pm

Thank you! I bought this tablet on Sunday, also at Big Lots. The instructions to download the market was perfect and I was able to download flash. Worth the money and provides what my 10-year-old wanted to do since I refuse to buy him an iPad. The camera is not good, but we have other devices for taking pictures. I was having problems dowloading with the Amazon app, also.

Laura June 14, 2012 um 1:04 pm

Did you ever get the Amazon app to download? I bought another tablet with similar specs and a $10 higher price (justified by a slightly better camera 1.3 MP vs 0.3MP, 8GB of internal memory vs 4GB, and an HDMI input) to compare the two tablets. I had the same problem on the second tablet when I tried to download the Amazon app. So obviously the problem is with me, not the tablet.

On both tablets I was able to download a Kindle app (we own a Kindle as well) with no problem from the Android Market.

Holly Golightly June 15, 2012 um 6:47 pm

Paul Algier – Suggest warning kids the rules are no downloads, free or paid, without my direct supervision. Avoids unwanted bloatware and unexpected charges…………and prevent future 'beating'.

My tablet, my rules – advance warning. Also sign out of Amazon in case piece is lost to nefarious strangers.

pat June 16, 2012 um 1:58 am

I love this tablet it is quite amazing! I am a pretty savvy android user and this tablet far exceeds expectations. It runs gta III better than my flagship (though an old Verizon flagship) 4g Droid charge does. This tablet was worth 89.99 I would have payed kindle fire prices in fact for this type of performance. The capacitive screen is far more responsive than the resistive screen on my leader impression ( returned- that thing sucked) and it is a nice surprise on a $90 tab. Whatever company made this under Polaroids name hit it out of the water and I am sure if Polaroid were still around they’d be happy to have this represent them. My only complaint is that its design is cheap but that’s not a big deal. With no frills CPU I can over clock this to 1.2 ghz and it is fast af. I Eben like this better than my I pad (pics is awesome I wish my charge had it).

This unit does appear to have a microphone as I recorded a video of myself and it picked up my testing 123. Not sure where as I see no sign of it.

Nate Hoffelder June 17, 2012 um 12:39 pm

Nope, no mike.

It kinda makes you wonder about the value of the webcam, doesn’t it?

Dave June 17, 2012 um 1:21 pm

I DOES have voice recording capasbility if you use a headset with a built in mike. I just did it so Skype will work It justs gets better…

Loretta McCarthy December 10, 2012 um 4:55 pm

Look on the back of your tablet for thepicture/icon ofa microphone. I did add a 16gb micro sd card to mytablet. Learning to download/move things to it. Don’t have a touchscreen cell phone-R375C from Straight Talk. It has Opera mini and the webservice on it for $45 month unlimited talk, text, web.

none June 19, 2012 um 9:20 am

It does have a microphone. I’ve not found it yet, but am guessing it is in the reset pinhole (like a Nextbook), or even worse, by the speakers.

I found this out by simply using a VOIP app. I was able to converse using it, so I proved that there was mic somewhere in the unit. I suggest you revise your description, unless maybe you first want to do this check yourself. It is also possible that there are variant versions of this device, some with, and some without mics.

Nate Hoffelder June 19, 2012 um 9:27 am

I just looked over mine and I cannot see where they hid a microphone. It’s also not listed on the packaging or in the manual, which points out everything from the speaker to the card slot.

But I can confirm your assessment. The camera app records video – and sound. Clearly there’s a mike.

Thanks for the heads up!

Eric Odessa June 27, 2012 um 7:08 pm

Hi,

Anyone knows how to make the 702C act as host USB (for keyboard etc.)?

Thomas November 3, 2012 um 1:02 am

You need an OTG cable. You can order one from Polaroid for $10 or get one from China for less than $2. It’s a short cable with a male mini-usb connector at one end and a female usb port on the other.

Hi so I was thinking about getting this tablet my olny question is do u have to pay monthly to use it like a cell phone if you already have a router or no

Nate Hoffelder July 29, 2012 um 1:26 pm

There’s no monthly charge.

Jimmy September 20, 2012 um 9:59 pm

For peeps looking for flash, I found it at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336

It seems Adobe is giving up on flash, finally, and is being stingy about it, said I "can’t download it in my country". However, that just means you need to find the APK on your own. The above link is for Jelly Bean, but worked fine for me with the Polaroid.

I’m really impressed with how much computer $90 buys these days.

Greg November 20, 2012 um 9:47 pm

The instructions say it is for Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) – is it okay to install on our 4.0 tablets?

Nate Hoffelder November 20, 2012 um 9:48 pm

Yes. I’ve even installed this set of files on tablets running 3.0 and 2.3.

Hi everybody,

Dumb question (but I never had a tablet before) : is there any way to plug a 3G USB key in this guy, for instance to check mail or surf the Web when there is no wifi available?

Thanks for helping 🙂

My seven year old grandson wants a iPad would the android be ok for him as he only likes playing games on my apple iPad ,would it be almost like the iPad

Thomas November 3, 2012 um 12:48 am

Depends on the game, something like Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja works fine on a cheapo tablet like this, but some of the newer games are too demanding for a Polaroid or similar. If you want to be sure of running games, get something like the Google Nexus or Kindle Fire HD.

Not all iPad games have an Android version, but most of the popular ones do.

Crystal November 11, 2012 um 5:57 pm

Does anyone know if there is a fix for the g-sensor problem yet. Still unable to use any tilt action for games.

I was thinking about purchasing this tablet for my daughter However I was wondering if there was a way to enable the wifi so she can’t access the Internet without me. she would just like to have the apps. I know some tablets are capable of doing this. does anybody know?

Nate Hoffelder November 19, 2012 um 2:58 pm

This tablet does not support that kind of restriction.

If you do want to control internet access, you might want to check out the Nabi 2 tablet which is going on sale on Friday. It’s a kid’s tablet so it might already have the software to do what you want.
https://the-digital-reader.com/2012/11/19/black-friday-deals-2012/

lin December 1, 2012 um 1:40 pm

download seal and lock the browser… then if she need to browse have her bring it to you so you can unlock it temporarily… as you could with any other app like the market and such… then you have full control. also get kid friendly browser and enable administrator controls and you will be set

Greg November 20, 2012 um 11:03 am

Just wanted to note that that I bought the identical tablet branded as Uniden at Big Lots on Sunday – it is on sale this week for $58.88. The model number is UTAB71, also made by Southern Telecom.

I was able to install Android Marketplace per your instructions but, for some reason, I am having trouble with Chrome – it stops with an error popup as soon as I start it. Has anyone been able to get Chrome running on their tablet, Polaroid or Uniden?

Tanny November 27, 2012 um 11:22 am

I have no problem getting all my photos onto my tablet, but do you know how to put them into seperate albums and rename the albums?

a newnham December 12, 2012 um 8:52 am

OK,
I have the thing and it works fine. But the name of the game is upgrades to keep it working for the kids and keep them off the IPAD. What are the three basisc upgrades?
Google Play Store?
8 gig SD card?
Something to kill background apps

Has anyone got Jellybean made for PMID701i_10 or _x10 yet??

Francisco Spain December 19, 2012 um 5:52 am

Dear friends I have just bought a 7″ It Works TM702 that looks just like the Polaroid. Are they both the same tablet?
May I use more that 8gb SD card?

Nichole stewart December 20, 2012 um 4:41 pm

I recently got this tablet and proceeded to download amazon App Store as well as some games for my son to play. My problem is this…when I went back in the App Store to download more games, all I’m getting is a toolbar at the top to search something. If anyone has input as to why I can’t get in the App Store to choose games, it would be greatly appreciated!

Nate Hoffelder December 20, 2012 um 4:54 pm

I’ve found the best way to download the Amazon appstore is to do it from the tablet.

Open a web browser and google "download Amazon appstore". One of the top links should take you to a page on Amazon’s website with a download link.

Brittany December 25, 2012 um 9:27 pm

I just purchased this tablet for my Mom for Christmas, and some of the letters when you press on them don’t work. Are you supposed to sync this kind of like you do the iphone to get the letters to match up?..

I bought the tablet for my spouse and it won’t stay connected to the internet… I downloaded the applicable updates and it is still disconnecting. I tried shutting down the router and going into the room where it’s kept for a stronger connection and the same thing…it will not stay connected to wifi. I took it to McDonalds today for the free wifi, since its a stronger/broader connection and now it won’t even connect! We are both super frusterated!! Any ideas??

Return the tablet. It sounds like it is defective.

Why is this?

Nate Hoffelder June 1, 2014 um 2:34 pm

Generally this is a sign of either a hardware of software failure. Either the OS won’t load, or the chips are corrupted. The only general solution I can suggest is to press and hold the power button in the hopes that you can reboot the tablet.

Louise April 4, 2013 um 7:22 pm

I’m having problems transferring photos from my computer to my Polaroid tablet. The "manual" (are you sensing frustration?) tells me to connect with the cord, select "Turn on USB storage" (okay so far) and then "select 'OK'". But I don’t see OK anywhere, and the graphic in the manual doesn’t show it either. Any ideas?

Louise April 4, 2013 um 7:46 pm

Novice alert! I sorted that part out (a bit embarrassing now that I see the error of my ways) and moved on, but now I’m stuck again. The Autoplay window that pops up isn’t for "Internal" only for "Removable disk". So, it seems I could move photos from my table to my computer, but what I really want to do is move photos from my computer to my tablet. Is my only option to buy a micro SD card? I was hoping I could use the cord supplied, until I knew if I wanted to use the tablet for showing photos.

Can anyone tell me if the new tablet will aloe u to play Temple run or the moron test? The first one didn’t allow it.

Thomas May 7, 2013 um 5:11 pm

My PMID701i ran Temple Run just fine. I assume any of the newer ones would be able to handle it. Which model do you have?

Kathleen Maples May 11, 2013 um 11:23 am

I just bought this tablet last night at Big Lots. Installed apps no problem. Battery wasn’t fully charged when I went to bed, getting low, so I plugged it up to charge and this morning can’t get it to come on. The tablet will not power on at all. When I hooked it up to the computer (like I did last night with no problem) I get an error msg saying the device has malfunctioned and isn’t recognized.
Any ideas?

Nate Hoffelder May 11, 2013 um 12:49 pm

It sounds like the tablet might have frozen up some time during the night.

Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds to turn the tablet all the way off. Then restart the tablet and see if it works.

Kathleen Maples May 11, 2013 um 2:45 pm

I’ve tried pressing the power button and holding it for 10 seconds, tried the paper clip in the reset pinhole. Nothing.

Kathleen Maples May 11, 2013 um 2:46 pm

I can’t get it to do anything, it won’t turn on. Period.

Nate Hoffelder May 11, 2013 um 3:20 pm

winona May 12, 2013 um 11:04 am

How did u get 701 to play temple run??? Details please

Thomas May 12, 2013 um 11:23 am

I got it from Google Play. It ran.

The only thing I can think of is that I didn’t use Nate’s method for installing Play. I actually ran a script that was made for an Iview tablet. It should work on most Allwinner A10 tablets. If you want to try it, you can download it here:

Big Lot Polaroid Jelly Bean Tablet.

Can the supplied USB cable charge the battery
when plugged into a 12 vdc Car Cigarette Lighter Adapter ?

So long as you also use a 12v to 5v converter, yes.

for getting google play to work on your polaroid.

1. download by googling gapps 2.3.4, unzip it to your sd or external sd card.

2. install google certificate, one time init and setup wizard in addition to vending apk. do not install the google play file.

3. go to settings, location services. you will now see two icons available for allow google location services. make sure both are checked.

4. hit the google market icon in the apps (the boxes on the upper right corner of the screen first) or the market icon in the upper left corner of the apps section. it will now take you through the sign in process. Do not install google account from the settings accounts menu. make sure your connected to the internet.

Thanking you in advance…

Google is your friend.

This is an Android tablet, I assume? The thing about Android is that most use a standard layout for the menus, including the settings menu.

I would Google whichever version of Android this tablet is using, and i would also google the words you see in the settings menu. Add the word translation to the search and Google will tell you what the word means. You can use this trick to figure out what the settings menu says and eventually identify which option leads to the keyboard and language menu.

If this is an Android tablet do I have to have internet access in my house to be able to go online or does it work like my Android smartphone?
