LeVar Burton’s Reading Rainbow App Launches Tomorrow

LeVar Burton, of Reading Rainbow, Star Trek, and Roots fame,  was on hand earlier today at a press conference. His new reading app for kids, which was first announced last fall, is due to launch tomorrow.

This app is intended  to give parents a trustworthy source for books that they can share with their children. Each story and video will have been vetted by experts, thus removing the worry about the content or the need for parents to inspect every single book.

“For 25 years Reading Rainbow gave me the opportunity to excite children about books and reading through the medium of television.  With RRKidz, I will be able to bring that same spirit of discovery, imagination and adventure to today’s  digitally connected kids through enhanced e-books,” said Burton. “RRKidz’  innovative platform allows us to deliver an incredibly exciting interactive storytelling experience through partnerships with leading publishers.”

I couldn't make it to the press conference myself, but clearly some parents did and they brought their kids:

The app will be available for the iPad and Android as a free download. The content will be sold on a subscription basis ($9.99 per month or $26.99 for 6 months) and will offer access to hundreds of ebooks, videos, and learning experiences galore. Past news reports suggest that some of the stories will even be narrated by Mr. Burton, but I cannot confirm if that is still going to happen.
