Coby to Launch MID7065 Google Play-Certified Tablet at CES 2013

coby-mid7065[1]Coby has been dabbling in marginal quality Android tablets for a couple years now, and now it seems they are stepping up their game. They’ve just announced a new 7″ Android tablet, the MID7065, and it’s going to be the first Coby tablet that you won’t have to hack to install Google Play.

It’s expected to ship this quarter with a retail of $150.

The MID7065 is going to be running Android 4.0 on a dual core 1.2GHz Amlogic AM8726-MX CPU. I don’t have details yet on the screen resolution (FCC docs suggest it is 1024×600), but I can report that this tablet has 1GB RAM, 8GB Flash storage, a microSD card slot, and a disappointing VGA webcam. But on the upside this tablet reportedly has Bluetooth in addition to Wifi.

I’m still casting about for more details on this tablet, because at this point the lack of info on the screen resolution or the type of touchscreen is setting off bells. I’m afraid that this tablet has an older lower resolution screen. That would be a reason not to get it, not when there is a $130 alternative with a higher resolution screen. The Kindle Fire for $10 more is also a tempting alternative.

Coby is going to be an exhibitor at CES next week, and I have put this tablet on my todo list. and if it is cheap enough I also plan to put it on my buy list.

Speaking of Coby tablets, I’ve had my hands on a couple. I thought that they were uniformly overpriced and undrspecced. Don’t get me wrong; I like budget tablets. But the MID7033 and the MID1042 were both a little more expensive and a little more cheaply built than the competing tablets from Ematic, Polaroid, and others.

I’m hoping this tablet breaks with the trend.

  1. Apparently — thanks to Shenzen factories — Coby is stepping up its game. I’d be surprised if this was a lo-res screen and not 1024 x 600 at the very least. Word has already leaked that the next gen of their 8″ tablet will have a 1024 x 768 screen, which is a huge step up from the current 8″ with 800 x 600. And all Coby tablets have had capacitive screens lately, AFAIK. I fondled their iPad clone — 9.7″ — but found it too underpowered to consider.

The insane Archos will be releasing the 8″ 80xs with a 1024 x 768 screen for just $199. So Coby has to match that or even come in lower. You’re going to go broke buying all these craptabs.

    1. Oops. Early-morning error. Archos 80xs is not the $199 one. It’s in their Carbon series, I think. Insane Archos can’t focus and do one *great* tablet, so they’re doing THREE LINES of crappy tablets — Carbon (which I think is the $199 one), XS, and Titanium.
