Asus Throws Caution to The Wind, Releases the Memo Pad ME172V in the US for $149

1Remember that underpowered budget tablet that Asus leaked last year and later launched in Russia? It’s now available in the US, and I still think it’s not worth getting.

As much as I like budget tablet, this one is more than a little weak when compared to almost any other budget device on the market.

Just to refresh your memory, the Memo Pad ME172V is running Android 4.1 on a single-core 1GHz CPU, 400MHz Mali GPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB of Flash storage, and a microSD card slot. This tablet also has a 1MP front-facing camera, g-sensor, and a screen resolution of 1024×600.

Those specs would have been okay last year, but in 2013 they are rather underpowered. For only $50 more you could buy a Nexus 7 with a much better CPU and a higher resolution screen, though you would have to give up on the card slot.

2Or for $10 more than the Memo Pad ME172V you could get an 8″ tablet with a faster dual-core CPU, slightly larger screen, and all around better specs. That’s the Idolian MiniStudio that I reviewed last month. The screen might be a little bigger, but I think it’s worth the better specs.

And if you don’t want an 8″ tablet, I’m expecting to see 7″ tablets with dual-core CPUs later this year that will almost certainly cost less than the ME172V. I’d wait for them.

I read your reviews all the time. I do agree waiting for the new 7″ tablets to arrive. I recently saw the specs on the HP 7″ Slate to come out sometime now in June. I’d like to know what you think about that tablet. Thank you.

Earlier today Newegg was selling a 7 inch tab with the same screen resolution and specs, except with only 4GB flash memory, for $65. It had pretty good reviews, too.
