B&N Launches New Nook for Kids App, Will Ship on XO Tablet

B&NXO learning tablet 2 has long been promising to release a Nook for Kids app for Android and it finally showed up this week.

Barnes & Noble has just announced a new partnership with OLPC. The new Nook for Kids app, which still isn’t available in Google Play or anywhere else, is going to be released for the XO Tablet later this week. That 7″ tablet runs OLPC’s specialized educational software on top of Android 4.0, and pretty soon it will gain access to a kid-friendly ebookstore.

B&N says that the Nook app for kids provides a curated reading experience for children that is fully compliant with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). It offers access to thousands of new and classic children’s titles, and kids can easily find a favorite story and engage with the books and their favorite characters by digitally turning pages, interacting with the text, and zooming in and around graphics.

“By partnering with One Laptop per Child, we are strengthening our commitment to make NOOK content available to new and existing customers across a broad range of platforms and devices,” said Mike Saturnia, Vice President and General Manager of Nook Sales & Business Development.

The XO Tablet will also get the full Nook Android app so parents can manage the child accounts in the Nook for kids app. This tablet debuted at CES 2013 and launched in July 2013. it has a dual-core 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, a pair of cameras (1.3MP and 2MP), 8GB internal storage, and a screen resolution of 1024 x 600.

It retails for $129 at Walmart.
