Kindle for Android Updated

kindle itunes logoAmazon issued an update today for the Kindle Android app.  The update doesn’t add any major new features, but according to the changelog it does offer a few useful refinements.

The update adds faster cover loading and it reportedly also fixed the sensitivity issue that some have experienced when using the volume buttons as page turn buttons. According to the changelog readers also have greater font choices, which strange because I can’t seem to find any options for font choices.

Amazon is also promising auto-brightness controls, meaning that the Kindle app is now integrated with the auto-brightness option for your Android device. Unfortunately I have the brightness set manually on my Hisense Sero 7 Pro, and the Kindle app completely ignores the setting. I have to manually adjust the brightness inside the app as well as outside the app, and it’s getting to being annoying.

You can find the app in Google Play and other fine app stores.

Here’s the change log:

– Font choices
– Faster cover loading
– Auto-brightness controls
– Easy access to table of contents in the book
– Fixed sensitivity of volume button page turning
Looking for additional options or settings?
– In a book, tap the center of the screen
– In the library, tap and hold any item

While not earth shattering, I think this is a significant update: not just font choices, but finally, an NCX navigator (obviating the need to use hyperlinked table of contents in most cases). Just about ever ePub reader app has had this feature for years. Kindle for iOS still doesn’t have it.

Apparently the brightness control has fixed some problems with Nexus 7 at least. Seems to work okay on my aging Xoom as well.

Perhaps best of all, the silly Carousel is gone!

I can still see it on the Home menu.

Yeah, I usually have default view set to On Device or Collections and have to scroll up to see Home (my tablet mostly is docked in landscape so not as much vertical for. So I didn’t see it up there.

Me too. I had to go double check by switching to the other menu.

I hate the carousel too.

how do I find the brightness control within the Kindle/Android software. The background for my books is now dark so it is very difficult to see the text. Everything has been find with reading since I downloaded the Kindle for Android ap and installed in on the Samsung Tab3. Then yesterday when I put the tablet down and returned to it a few minutes later the background went dark and I’m at a loss to get it back. Can anyone help

From inside a book:

Tap the center of the screen to bring up the menu, and then select the "Aa" option in the upper right corner. The brightness control is in that menu.

Does anyone know how to up the brightness on the Samsung app. Touching the centre doesn’t work

Thanks so much! Who knew? I would have never thought to click on the "Aa" option. I had been dealing with a dark screen for days!

On my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.1, swiping the screen upwards gently brightens it in Kindle, and downwards dulls it. Found by accident (in deep frustration!). Don’t know if this is a native Android 4.4 feature or a Kindle refinement

When I go to view my saved notes and marks, that option is not there. I found if you go to Notebooks, it will give you something like it. Before there were small marks in color, a distinction on whether it was highlight or a bookmark, and it also included the page number. All that is gone. and there are only lines with a garbage can icon at the end. Is there a way to change things to the way it was before? This is on a Kindle Reader I have on my Samsung Tablet with Android in it.

This is weird.

I am not sure what is causing your problem, but have you tried rebooting the tablet?
