Barnes & Noble Rolls Out New Update for the Nook Glowlight

Poking holes in the rumor that they fired their entire hardware staff, Barnes & Noble released a new update today for the Nook Glowlight, their latest ereader.

Readers can now enjoy a better shopping experience, improved search capabilities,, and the ability to redeem access codes on the device (this previously required the B&N website).

This update also includes the usual bug fixed and performance improvements. It’s going to be pushed out to Nook Glowlights over the next few weeks, but if you don’t want to wait you can download it manually.  You can find the update and instructions on how to install it on the B&N website.

Here is the changelog:

– Improved Shop browsing
– Easier search capabilities
– Ability to redeem access codes on device
– Newsstand list view now displays issue count
– Whole page viewing now the default setting for side-loaded PDFs
– Bug fixes for stability and performance

With the retirement of the Nook Touch, the Nook Glowlight is currently Barnes & Noble’s only ebook reader. It is complimented in B&N’s gadget stable by a couple rather old Android tablets, the Nook HD and Nook HD+.

B&N has said that they plan to launch a new tablet this year, possibly in partnership with a hardware maker. They are also making moves into the academic market.

hardware developers ≠ software developers

I would think that giving pink slips to the hardware guys wouldn’t mean that software developers couldn’t release updates to the software.

I have to say I quite like my glow light, more than the Kindle Paperwhite (seems to respond faster and set up was easier).

Its just a shame its more of a pain to get non-Nook bought ebooks onto it.

…..still lovin' the Nook HD+ as my primary reader for books, news and magazines.

I have to say that I’ve owned all three of the Nook readers and loved them all. I think they offer a friendlier, more bookish experience. That being said… I want the buttons and fancy cases back.
