About Nate Hoffelder (11474 Articles)
Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."

  1. That article on responsive e-book design looks interesting, but also a bit annoying due to its rather short-sighted focus on iBooks and the Kindle Fire.

I would love to use media queries to customize my e-book layouts, but unfortunately the situation is not as simple as them just being inconsistently supported. The CSS rendering modules in many older epub rendering engines, including the versions of Adobe Digital Editions that drive the kobo and nook, don’t just fail to implement media queries, they see them as errors and throw out the whole stylesheet if they’re present.

Although things are changing, it’s often not possible to have a baseline-quality layout and a fancy layout for machines that support it. You get a choice of fancy layout or no layout at all.
