Christian Grey to Get the Final Word in New 50 Shades Sequel

gray el jamesEL James revealed on Monday that she wasn’t done with the most popular trilogy of 2012.

The Guardian reports James will be publishing a new addition to the series later this month which will recount the tale from the viewpoint:

Holy crap! Christian Grey, the enigmatic, dominating protagonist of EL James’Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, is about to tell the world his own story, from how he became a successful entrepreneur by the age of 27 to why he has a “Red Room of Pain” on hand for his lover.

“Christian is a complex character,” said James in a statement provided by her publisher, “and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past. Also, as anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows, there are two sides to every story. It’s been a great pleasure to return to my happy place – writing, being with Christian and Ana in their universe, and working with the fantastic publishing teams in the US and the UK.”

The Mansplainer Edition of 50 Shades will be called simply Grey. It’s due out on 18 June (the character’s birthday), and everyone involved is simply wet with excitement. According to editor Selina Walker, Grey is "just as addictive as the trilogy". She added that she was "absolutely thrilled when we heard that Erika wanted to write Christian’s side of the story".

Over 125 million copies of the trilogy have been sold in the past 4 years. The tale of a burgeoning BDSM relationship between shy student Anastasia Steele and businessman Grey has been made into a movie, and it has inspired infinite number of lackluster copycats.

And now the trilogy has a sequel. Are you going to buy it?

I would not normally touch this type of work with a ten foot pole, but I’m seriously considering buying it just to see what James wrote. The trilogy featured laughably bad writing like "my inner goddess is doing the meringue with some salsa moves", and I would really like to know if Grey will be quite so absurd.

I’d also like to get it just to make my mother ask _why_ I bought it (we share a Kindle account). That in and of itself might be worth the cost.

The book is up for pre-order on Amazon and other sites. The Kindle edition is a reasonable $8.

Obviously E.L. has hooked herself up to an Infinite Improbability Drive and out popped yet another book in the increasingly inaccurately named trilogy.

I never read the original book, but she’s a brilliant business woman.

I am wondering if this gambit is going to work for her.

She claims that her fans have asked for it – but I would hazard a guess that the bulk of her fans like to empathize with her protagonist Ana.

"What if I were Ana?" they like to think. "Imagine if I were hanging on that hot rack of monkey-love pain and Christian Grey was practicing his best Boy Scout knotwork on me. Boy howdy, hum-diggedy-dum."

Or words to that effect.

They might not dig hearing this story from a man’s point of view. They might not really get off on listening to Christian Grey’s inner knot-thoughts – "Hmmm, is it right over left and under or left under right and over?"

I guess we’ll have to hang in there and wait until those two happy young lovebirds FINALLY tie the knot…

Well, maybe Grey’s thoughts run more towards: "Day-am, that Ana chick looks just like Momma!" 🙂
