Updated: Tolino Vision 3 HD, Shine 2 HD eReaders to Ship This Month, Will Have Carta E-ink Screens

15213493084_fe17e30d58_hSeveral weeks ago I was the first to bring you the news of Tolino’s new ereaders, and now I can share a few key details in advance of tomorrow’s launch.

At the Frankfurt Book Fair tomorrow Tolino will be releasing updated replacement models for both of its ereaders. We don’t have complete specs, but I can report that AlleseBook.de has revealed that both the Vision 3 HD and the Shine 2 HD will have 6″ Carta E-ink screens.

The Shine 2 HD is thinner and smaller than its predecessor, but it is keeping the signature home button below the screen as well as the frontlight and IR touchscreen found on the previous Shine. It will have 4GB of storage (2GB free for ebooks, and a microSD card slot), and a 1.5Ah battery.

Update: I can also add that the Shine 2 HD has a 1Ghz Freescale i/MX CPU with 512MB RAM but no microSD card slot. The earlier report was wrong.

Here’s a hands on video from lesen.net:

The Vision 3 HD, on the other hand, looks almost identical to the previous Vision model. It has a capacitive touchscreen and frontlight, and comes with 4GB of storage (2GB free for ebooks), and a 1.5Ah battery.

According to another source, the new Vision will still have the waterproof nanocoating and the rear-mounted page turn buttons found on the current model. The only real difference between the Vision models will be the screen.

Update: All of the above details about the Vision 3 HD are correct, and it too has a 1GHz CPU with 512MB RAM. And here’s another hands on video:

That screen will be a 300 ppi Carta E-ink screen, with a resolution of 1440 x 1072. That’s the same screen found on the Kindle Paperwhite 3, the Kobo Glo HD, and other models. It’s currently the sharpest 6″ E-ink screen on the market.

Both models are expected to ship in Germany on 26 October.

The prices will be 119 euros and 159 euros. In comparison, the Paperwhite and Voyage cost 119 euros and 159 euros.

Where have you read, that the Vision 3 HD will have a microSD card slot? While that would be nice, I doubt it will, given that its predecessor (Vision 2) lacks one (Vision 1 still had one).

That was an error on my part. I misread my source, and missed the word "not".

Thanks for pointing it out!

Now officially out. Shine 2 HD lost the the microSD card slot. Prices aren’t what I’d call attractive with regard to the card slot shortcoming and the current device market: Shine 2 HD, 119 EUR, Vision 3 HD, 159 EUR. I’d say, still competitive with what’s in the market already, but who will bring back the memory card slot to current generation HD six inchers? And what are the prospects for the coming generation? Could there be any lower hanging fruit for a unique selling proposition? *headshaking*

Considering that they have the same screen as the Paperwhite 3 and that sells for 99 every so often, you’re right in that the prices aren’t compelling.
