Colbert, Franzen Troll Amazon (video)

stephen-colbert-jonathan-franzen-amazon-storyJonathan Franzen was a guest on The Late Show earlier this week when he took the opportunity to tell a scary bedtime story to host Stephen Colbert.

I won't give away the ending, but the story features Little Red Riding Hood and a Big Bad Wolf who has has big ears “to hear your opinions on the products I sell,” big eyes “the better to see your consumer preferences and target you with advertising,” big hands “the better to give you free overnight shipping,” and big teeth “to gobble up every retailer in the world.”

And as with any fairy tale, a hero swoops in and saves the day. I'm not going to spoil the ending for you, but I will say that the DoJ is also involved at some point.

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."

  1. …taken from the tome, “Approved Fairy Tales of the Cartel.” That’s a odd looking sticker on that sealed box that Colbert rips open to produce Franzen’s new book. Gosh, I wonder what it says? 😉
