This One Weird Trick Could Save Space on Your iDevice

8368640800_7f3eea9d5d_hThe limited storage on iDevices has forced many owners to develop workarounds (including streaming audiobooks) but now a solution is at hand. A number of Redditors have discovered, and Gizmodo reported, that there’s a trick to freeing up storage on your iDevice.

But I loaded my beat up iPhone 5 with music until it was bursting at the gills and then attempted to rent Peter Jackson’s 6.83 gigabyte masterpiece. Lo and behold, I had gained almost 200 megs out of nowhere. Three more rentals and my overstuffed phone had gone from a meager 381 megs to a full 1.2 gigs of free space.

This sounds like a joke, but I swear it’s not. There are any number of comments on Reddit which confirm the initial report.

"This is an awesome tip! Thank you! I went from 2.2GB free to 3.3 after a few tries," one redditor wrote. Another confirmed "That’s actually clever. I just went from 800 MB to 4.9 GB free space."

If you try this yourself, be sure to choose a movie which is larger than the space you have left. That will trigger the cleanup utility while at the same time it will keep you from being charged for the rental (you aren’t charged until the download starts).

At 10GB plus, Cleopatra would be a good choice for most iDevice owners given that it is terribly unlikely that you will free up enough space to download it. (And if you have a free 10GB, do you really need this trick?)

Have you tried it? How much space did you save?

Got a link? All I can find is the $3 app which no one is using. I can’t recommend it.

Which app is that? I googled, and found a game but not a utility.
