Amazon Leaks New, Cheaper Echo Dot on Twitter

Echo-DotIt looks like one of Amazon's social media teams may have "accidentally" revealed their next gadget.

Gizmodo, Recode, and a number of other sites are reporting that that official Echo Dot Twitter account prematurely announced an "all-new" $50 Echo Dot before deleting the tweet.

I haven't seen it myself, but a lot of people took a screenshot before Amazon deleted the tweet. Here's one:

The link mentioned in the tweet leads to the Amazon listing for the current Echo Dot, which is no longer available. That device cost $90, and it was basically a version of the Echo which only had a small speaker.

It was supposed to be hooked up to your sound system via the included audio cable or Bluetooth, and it had all the same voice command features as the $190 Echo, including playing audiobooks or reading news headlines on command.

Of course, that was the old model; we don't know yet what the new Echo Dot can do. Will the new hardware have new features, or does the lower price reflect a less capable device?

Amazon isn't talking, but a recent rumor suggests that Alexa might soon listen  and respond unprompted. That might be a feature on the new Echo Dot.

  1. I want one! Keep us posted on more rumors as they appear.

  2. If Amazon drops the price from 90 to 50, they will get many more sales.

  3. Isn’t Google’s “me too” due to ship “real soon now”?
Moving the Dot to impulse buy territory might head them off at the pass.

  4. I saw it pop up on my Twitter feed and clicked on it immediately. “Sold out,” it said. I would definitely get (another) one at that price, they’re quite useful.

  5. It’s back.
