My E-Reading Life: Greetings from New Contributor

parentshouseHello, everyone. Those of you who’ve been following e-reading for a while might know me as former Senior Writer for TeleRead.com, where I’ve been for the last six years. I talked a little about the history of e-reading that happened during the six years I was writing there in my farewell post to the site.

For my inaugural post here, I thought I would go into my own personal e-reading background and what my hopes are for the future of e-books. Once you know where I’ve come from, then you can follow where I’m going. Let’s begin.

Is Nokia working on a Meego tablet? (video)

Here’s another rumor from Digitimes:

Talking with upstream component makers, the analyst pointed out that Nokia has already completed about 100 engineering samples ready for testing. The tablet PC’s panel size will be either 7- or 9-inch and manufactured by Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), the Hong Kong-listed handset subsidiary of Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), the analyst noted.

My opinion on this is mixed. Yes, I think Nokia is working on a tablet. But, I don’t think they’re going to release it. The tablet market is going to be quite crowded by late summer, and I expect Nokia to cut their losses and shelve the prototype.

Calibre adds support for Nokia E71X

The latest version of calibre (0.6.55) is available for download. Here’s a summary of the changes:

New Features

  • Support for the Nokia E71X
  • EPUB Output: Generate a default one entry TOC if no TOC is present. This allows the EPUB to pass epubcheck and work on the Kobo
  • Kobo driver: Add support for storage card
  • PDF Output: Improved cover and comic handling
  • EPUB metadata: When setting authors, always move the new dc:creator element to the top so broken implementations don’t get confused

Bug Fixes

  • Make the HTML shown in the regex builder closer to that actually processed by the conversion pipeline.
  • Fix tab ordering in Bulk edit meta information dialog
  • EPUB Input: Ignore __MACOSX directories inside the EPUB file
  • EPUB Input: Raise an appropriate error for DTBook EPUB files
  • EPUB Output: Use correct SVG code when not preserving aspect ratio for covers
  • Use PNP drive number based sorting on windows when the device has identical main memory and card ids

Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books.
