Piracy and Phrophylactics

Piracy and Phrophylactics Piracy You can tell that things are screwed up when it's easier to pirate something rather than buy.

I came across this story a few days ago. It's a screen shot of a conversation between a Rosetta Stone customer service rep and a frustrated potential customer. He's trying to buy the latest version of one of Rosetta Stone's language packages. Only he can't; it's not available yet in the UK.

You can click on it to see it full size.

He can't order it from the US website; they won't ship over seas. Also, the RS rep couldn't promise that he'd get a free update if he bought the older version, so unless he's willing to be stuck with an outdated software package he's going to pirate the latest version.

If right now you're thinking that he should simply do without, then you  don't know anything about human behavior. You'd have as much luck ordering back the tide.

This is an example of one of the more frustrating aspects of piracy. Rosetta Stone cost themselves a sale here, and it would be so easy to avoid that.

A sad comment on humanity that you believe human behaviour is ‘if you won’t sell it to me, I’ll steal it’. I don’t think that’s true of most people, only people who are willing to steal.

The guy stole it, didn’t he? I’d say that proves it is human behavior.
