Mirasol, Pocketbook, and e-readers

I’m going to be in NYC for a conference next week. I noticed while laying pout my schedule earlier that Qualcomm have a booth at the conference, and they also have a senior person as a guest speaker on Wednesday.

This isn’t unusual, actually, and I doubt that Qualcomm will announce the new ereader this week. But it got me thinking about who might be working with Qualcomm. We know that one party is (was?) Pocketbook, but we really don’t know who else might be working on a Mirasol ereader.

But I have a theory.

There’s a particular hardware company that have demonstrated that they like to experiment and they like to push into new markets. They’ve released a couple new ereaders in the past 6 months – and those ereaders use 2 different screen technologies. They’ve also release a couple unusual tablet designs recently. This is also the company that jump-started the netbook market.

I’m talking about Asus.

I don’t have any proof, but you have to admit that it makes some sense. I think that if it were at all possible, Asus would be working on a Mirasol ereader. But are they?

Who would you propose as a hardware partner? I know everyone is going to suggest Amazon, which is the obvious answer. Does anyone have a new suggestion?

P.S. Speaking of Pocketbook, they aren’t listed as an exhibitor. If they were then I would change my mind about the possibility of an announcement. In fact, if I see anyone from Pocketbook, I’m going to wheedle the time of the press conference out of them and post that detail immediately.

Bah. I’ve long said Asus is the company that could shake up the eBook market. But they might want to bother now. if they knew what I think I know today.

I don’t know about Asus, but I think your right about Pocketbook. They have been suspiciously quiet lately and missed all of their promised deadlines to announce a Mirasol reader. I think the new technology was more than they could handle and they may be out of the running. It could be Asus and it most certainly could be Amazon to be first.
