The tablet supply is going to dry up in the coming months

Digitimes are reporting that there’s going to be a shortfall of components for large tablets in the next few months.

The market had originally expected the tight supply of components and key materials caused by the Japan earthquake will ease in May. Contrary to the expectations, the crisis of the possible interruption of the supply chain now is likely to emerge in the second half of May, indicated the sources.

I’ve already found the first victim. I’ve been told that the E-Fun Next4 Android tablet has been suspended. The supply of 10″ 4:3 touchscreen components is so limited that E-Fun can’t get enough for a production run.

And if this is already a problem now, chances are it will only get worse.

Give me a 16:9 display anyday.

This could be a good thing in the long term. The dead run towards SUV tablets is a disaster. If companies stop and look at what people actually do with tablets, they may end up coming out with innovative designs.

The supply was bought up by Apple and HP, period. Anyone else wanting 4:3 will have to have their cast-offs that didn’t pass QA.

And given how excited people over the Asus Transformer, Asus probably will have a lock on the 16:9 screens soon.

Apple and HP aren’t buying the 800×600 resolution screens E-Fun uses.

That’s good, because the Next4 uses a 10″ 1024×768 screen.

My mistake… but since Apple and HP are using 9.7″ in their tablets, there’s no reason for them to be buying these up.

True, but others use the10″ screen. Also, I bet that any production line that makes a 10″ panel can be adapted to make a 9.7″ panel.

Good thing I prefer 16×10 displays.

We also don’t know what other players are out there snatching up huge advance buys on screens.
