Kinokuniya, Sony, Panasonic to cooperate on a joint ebook platform

A bunch of companies got together today in japan and promised to think about combing their efforts into a mutually compatible ereader platform. (Curiously enough, that’s the sum total of the English language  news reports.)

Kinokuniya, Sony, Panasonic, and Rakuten met in Japan today and released a statement stating that they plan "discuss building a system that will allow reciprocal use of their e-book readers and stores by the second half of the year."  the goal of this partnership is a single service that lets users see all ebook purchases from all stores and manage them across all devices.

Hm. it sounds something like what you can already do with DRM free ebooks and calibre.
