The Sony Reader Pocket Edition is out of stock – New model coming?

Here's some more rumor and speculation for my detractors to gnash their teeth over. *grin*

I’ve just heard that the 2 leading Dutch ebook reader retailers have run out of the PRS-350, Sony’s smaller and cheaper 5″ ebook reader. (Curiously enough, it’s also running low at Amazon.com).

I agree with my source in that this is a surprise. The Pocket Edition has been in stock and widely available since it launched last fall. Even when its larger cousin was rare as a hen’s tooth, the Pocket Edition could still be found just about everywhere.

Given the Consumer Reports rumor, the sales on the new and refurbished Daily Editions, the calendar date, and now this supply shortage, I suspect that we really will see a new Sony Reader some time soon.

What do you think?

I just wish they would say something. I am going back and forth about what to get (if anything) and I want to have a full range of choices.

The Sony ereaders are running out of stock around the world; Sony may be discontinuing the product line entirely or reducing to a single device.

If you notice, Sony Style stores in the US state the PRS-950 and PRS-650 are out of stock; one model says "No longer available for purchase at Sony Store"; in fact, only the silver PRS-350 is available for sale. Best Buy in the US only carries Sony ereader accessories.

It’s a similar story in Canada with the Sony Style stores having very limited quantities and the traditional partners no longer carrying the devices.

The 350 has been absent from J&R for weeks. They claim they have it in stock, but who knows? That might mean the last 1 or 2. The 650 is gone. The 950 gone for over a month. Same situation at B&H.

Alexander has an interesting idea there: Paring it down to just one model. Hmmmm.

It would have to be a very good single model and well priced. I wouldn’t have gotten a sony if only the 950 were available, due to both size and price. Thanks to the multiple options, I was able to get my 350 and be happy.

I like the "three bears" choice of the Sony, but I could see them going single-model. Hopefully, if they go that route, it will be along the lines of the 650.

I emailed Sony Canada about trying to find the PRS-650 either in a retail store or online and this was the reply:
"While we haven’t made any official announcements as of yet, we are expecting to discontinue our current Reader models this summer and introduce a new model shortly there afterwards. While stock has been scarce for the past several months, we are awaiting confirmation on an estimated arrival date of our remaining PRS650 Readers before stock runs out completely. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you but we’ll surely post these Readers online for pre-order as soon as we’ve received an anticipated arrival date. " I was wanting to get one for my birthday in August but now I will wait and see what the 'new' model is like. Hopefully, it will be Wi-Fi compatible in Canada.
