Dutch ebook market has nearly doubled in the past year

Reports are coming in that nearly as many ebooks were sold in the Netherlands in the first half of 2011 as were sold in 2010.

BoekBlad reported yesterday that  ebook sales totaled €3.4 million  for January through June 2011, with about 327,000 units sold. Total book sales were €273.8 million, so this puts ebooks at about 1.2% of the Dutch book market.

Ebook sales in 2010 topped out at €3.7 million, and as you can see that is a respectable increase. It’s not as good as the 160% increase in the US market (for the first 4 months of 2011), but that actually makes the dutch numbers all that more impressive. The Dutch ebook market started out with a smaller supply and it lacked the marketing juggernaut that is Amazon.
