HP TouchPad to go on clearance at midnight – $99

There’s a rumor popping up all over in the past few hours, but I don’t know that I believe it. HP will supposedly put their cancelled webOS tablet on clearance at midnight, with a price of $99 for the 16GB model and $149 for the 32GB model.

It’s supposed to on clearance at all retailers on 20 August, and it looks like BestBuy.ca already started selling the TouchPad for $99 CAD (source). They’re out of stock, so this rumor could be true.

I’m planning to stay up just in case it turns out to be true. But I don’t really believe it.

The new price has already shown up on Amazon and the 16GB model is shown on HP.com as sold out. I guess this isn’t a rumor.

It depends on where you are looking. You can’t buy it at that price but the price does show up.

i’ve been to about 100 different tech sites and online store fronts since i saw this article from everything that ive seen this is strictly a canada deal and while there probably will be a price drop for the us it will
A. probably not be as low as 99 like canada
2.there is no information as of yet from any source about when a us price drop will be happening

well that was depressing i called 2 walmarts that are close to me about 1am est
they both said they had a few of them 1 said they didnt have a manager on staff that could price match something from an online ad and the other 1 did but when i went back to find the articles talking about them they all kept talking about canada price dropping not us yet. so i hung around this forum thread on slick deals listening to the thousands on posts pouring in for if/when any us stores would drop their prices. 1st legit one that popped up was the office depot one but i only wanted the 16 gb so i didnt buy for $30 more than what the others supposedly was going to be. then the forum was a buzz about oh 3am(midnight pst) prices would drop on amazon, bestbuy etc waited around till then and nothing ever happened but 1 other rumor came around before i gave up saying 7am the big retailers would be dropping their prices. but i went to bed and sure enough i wake up(10am) and the walmarts website price is now $100 and the 2 stores i called last night already sold out their devices "earlier in the morning"
i guess i should have gone down to the walmarts anyways bought one and waited things out lol but thats a big gamble
oh well they’ll be sold out everywhere before midnight tonite i bet and then its game over lol.
and funny thing is when there was the big deal going on about bestbuys having 250k in stock and only 25k selling but last night suspiciously before the midnight time the bestbuys website replaced their hp touchpad page to a website stating they wont honor any other stores price marks and only talking about return policies no option to buy them.
i bet that "talk" that bestbuy and hp had the other day about their inventory went something like this. sure sure we’ll take them off your hands since you dont want to wait it out like we asked for you to patently and then today WHAM 99 on the site and bestbuys running around going wth why didnt we listen to them.
lol

Half the time the HP site shows 99, the other half 399. But once I get it into the cart and try to check out (after clicking on it at 99) it goes to the higher price.

What are you going to do with it in a year when there are no apps developed for it? Or do you think that there is going to be grass roots support for it. Just curious not trolling.

Nate Hoffelder August 20, 2011 um 10:30 pm

I have no idea. Given some of the things I’ve read on the webOS developer forums, I don’t think very many developers will stick with the platform.

Then again, there will very shortly be a million or more TouchPad owners out there. Maybe user demand will inspire more apps.
