Hands On With the Onyx Boox M92 (video)

Some time back I posted a review of the Boox M90, the first large screen ebook reader from Onyx, a Chinese company. Today I get to show you their second and much improved model.

Booxtor, one of Onyx’s European retailers, posted this video on Youtube yesterday. As you can see in the video, the M92 is based on the 9.7″ E-ink screen. Like the M90, this ebook reader also has Wifi, a Wacom touchscreen (hence the stylus), SD card slot, and it’s running on an 800MHz Freescale CPU.

But there’s also several major changes. The M92 has several hardware buttons and it’s using a much improved firmware. I want you to look at the menus, and also look at where the various pop up windows appear. I think it looks fairly well designed, and this is what I expected to see on the M90 when I reviewed it.

The M92 is also significantly faster than the M90, but that goes without saying.

I was disappointed with the M90 because it was slow and because it was using the same menus as its 6″ siblings. Now I see why. It’s clear that Onyx abandoned their first large screen ereader and focused on the next model. That reinforces my opinion that the M90 isn’t worth buying.

But the M92 might be, if not for the fact that Onyx is selling it for 399 euros. It’s scheduled to ship from Onyx on 8 December, and they are taking pre-orders now.

"Booxtor, one of Onyx’s retail partners,"

I have seen him referred to as a beta tester, but never as retail partner.

Seriously – if a company drops support for a device even before warranty period for the first batch released to the market expires – who would take it seriously? Possibly, if it’s a $100 price range than I can treat it like a short term device.
Even if it indeed is faster and better and has improved firmware inside, there will be "bugs inside" (which should be the standard sticker for tech these days). Some of them will be annoying to most of the users, but – based on the experience – what could be the answer? Wait for the fixed firmware? Or rather – buy our next improved one device that does not have this issue…

Sadly, there’s not much of an alternative…

Onyx are probably abandoning the M90 in the sense of: not selling it anymore. But so far, Onyx has continued updating the firmware for all models they ever produced, and there is no reason to assume that they would stop doing that for the M90.
