Skytex to Launch Skypad Alpha 2 Android Tablet Later This Month

CES is just under a month away, but it looks like at least 1 company isn’t waiting to release their next tablet.  Skytex has just released some details on their next 7″ Android tablet.

The Alpha 2 is keeping the same 7″ screen as on the original Alpha, but it’s upgrading from the resistive touchscreen to a true capacitive touchscreen with up to 5 points of contact. It will ship with Android v2.3.4 running on a 1.2GHz CPU, and some time in early 2012 it will get an update to Android v4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

It will also have Wifi, a VGA webcam,, microSD card slot, and 4GB Flash storage, g-sensor, and it also has a graphics chip which supports true 1080p output and stereoscopic 3D video. The Alpha 2 is shipping with either GetJar app store or with 1Mobile, which has around 20  thousand apps (conflicting sources).

This tablet will be thinner and lighter than its predecessor, and it’s swapped out the plastic shell for an aluminum one. It’s already listed with one retailer but I’m told that the list price of $190 is probably going to drop be the time it ships.

All in all this looks to be a fairly capable tablet. I’m glad that Skytex upgraded the touchscreen; it was the previous model’s worst feature and really dragged down what was otherwise a really nice tablet.
