Nate’s Gear Bag (CES 2012)

I’ve finalized my gear kit for CES, and I thought someone might be interested in what a true gadget nut would carry. The photo above shows everything I’m bringing, but a good portion of it will stay in the hotel room.

Across the front of the photo is a wireless mouse, digital voice recorder, Virgin Mobile 3G dongle, auxiliary battery, and my Clear 4G hotspot. The mouse will obviously stay in the room, but I’m bringing it because I get more work down with it than without. There’s also a stand, and it’s under my laptop.  The 3G dongle will also stay in the hotel room; it’s backup for the 4G hotspot.

In the middle row are my Kyobo eReader, Galaxy Tab, and a Panasonic Lumix, my new camera. Those are going with me every day. I’m still not sure how to use the camera; it has so many buttons switches, and menu options that I find it intimidating. The Kyobo is coming so I can compare it against the demo units. I want to know why mine differs so much from the ones I’ve seen before. And the Galaxy Tab is going to be in hand most of the day, and it will double as my main ebook reader.

In the back row are my Dell laptop and Asus eeePad Transformer. I’m going to carry one of the 2 with me everyday, but I’m still not sure if the eeePad is capable of being a standalone laptop. I hope it is; I’d like to switch to it and make use of the 14 hours of battery life. Monday will involve more sitting than carrying the bag, so I will likely bring both laptops and see how long I can stand using the eeePad.

What you don’t see in this photo are the various cables, cards,  and other accoutrements that I’ll be bringing.

Ah, for the day when you can take just a damn 7″ tablet and wirelessly-connected keyboard!

Hi!

Subject to what features you fear the Transformer might be missing to be used as a standalone laptop, have you tried installing Linux in dual-boot? (I have a couple of links and hints if you’re interested.)

I’d consider it, but only after CES.

Geek!!! (I of course mean that in a good way). Great blog. Can’t wait to hear and see what’s cooking at CES.

For the Lumix LX5, buy this ebook in EPUB, PDF or Kindle format:

It will save you a lot of time even if you like I am an experienced amateur photographer.
