iriver’s New eReader Makes an Appearance at CES 2012, Coming in March

Last week I reported that iriver wasn’t going to show off their new ebook reader at CES, and it turns out that is true.  But just because they' weren’t announcing it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t there.

I stopped by the iriver booth this morning and spent a few minutes playing with an engineering demo. It’s not a production unit, and it doesn’t have a name. It doesn’t even have a model number yet, nor does it have finalized specs or a price.

But it is set to come out in March 2012.

The unit I played with didn’t work (other than the silver home button), but then again it wasn’t supposed to.  As you can see from the gallery, it looks an awful lot like the new Nook Touch, except that this device will be using the new XGA screen (1024×768 resolution). It’s also going to have a touchscreen, obviously, but they could not tell me whether it would be capacitive, IR, or what have you.

About all I know at the moment is that it will run Linux, not Android, and that it has Wifi, speaker (on the back), microSD card slot, and a headphone jack.

BTW, this is an engineering demo. Just because this one looks like the Nook Touch does not mean that the production model will also bear a resemblance. (But I think it will.) Also, the number that you can see in the photo is not the model number; I think it’s just the number for this particular sample.

I’ll be shocked if they release this in North America. And they sure do love their mini USB plugs. Maybe they have a huge back stock of the (not so little) suckers. Although 5k (mini) vs 10k (micro) connects/disconnects never bothered me. Either way these devices are long obsolete before the plug wears out.

Whoa! No final specs or price and its coming in 6-8 weeks?
Color me skeptical, even in this age of using consumers as beta testers.
Doesn’t it take just about that to get them here from the factory? 😉

And, while its nice to see they’ve gotten past their Kindle fixation, I’m not sure cloning the Nook STR is going to help them much in the US. Not with the original underperforming B&N’s expectations.

fjtorres- I think you’re right. The Story HD (which I own and use daily) was a dinosaur when it was announced and extinct when it was finally released.
