Joyplus M10PQ 10″ Pixel Qi Tablet Unveiled at CeBit

NetbookNews is on the scene at CeBit this week and they’ve found one of Pixel Qi’s new Chinese partners. It’s difficult to find a Pixel Qi product in the Western world, but China has a bunch.

Joyplus is a Shenzen manufacturer with a number of tablets and other products, but the one we’re interested in today is the M10PQ. This tablet is based around Pixel Qi’s 10″ screen, and it’s running on a Samsung 1GHz Hummingbird CPU with 4GB Flash storage, Wifi, microSD card slot, SIM card slot, and otherwise unremarkable specs. Unlike the Pixel Qi tablets sold by Sol Computers, the M10PQ is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

There’s no mention of price or release date, but this is probably going to be rather expensive for the underpowered budget tablet that it is. The Pixel Qi screen adds a couple hundred dollars to the retail price, thus putting it out of the reach of the cost-conscious.

Is it just me or has the honeymoon period worn off for Pixel Qi? I’ve been wanting to buy one of these screens on a tablet since 2009, and the closest I’ve gotten is looking at the demos at CES. That’s 4 years now that a commercial application has been right around the corner, and I’m tired of waiting.

I’m moving on.

What makes you think that’s going to happen? I’m not convinced that this screen tech will ever get cheap enough to replace LCDs.

I think 3M’s investment might bring some additional thinking into Pixel Qi. A breakthrough can always happen from any angle. Between Mirasol and Pixel Qi, I’d bet on Pixel Qi.

PixelQi…. Isn’t that that company that promised the moon but won’t even deliver rocks?

I’d still love to see a good tablet (worth the price) with this kind of screen. But I started breathing ages ago, again…

The product seems to be fantastic, but the execution of the idea and expectatives management is surprisingly sub-par
