B&N’s Past Website Registrations Hint at Alternate Names for the New Nook Touch

I was digging through my past posts this morning while trying to find something, and I happened across an old post which I had forgotten. It brings up an old bit of news that isn’t important anymore, but I till think it’s interesting.

Barnes & Noble, like many companies, likes to register website URLs which are related to their products. They also tend to get URLs which sound similar or might engender confusion for their customers. This is quite the common practice; most companies do it.

And that is probably why B&N registered a couple URLs back in February. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but it looks like B&N might have been planning to use the new URLs as the product names.

The sites they registered were nookglow.com and Nookshine.com. Neither URL is active at the moment, so clearly B&N isn’t using them. But do you recall what B&N launched last week?

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that 2 months those sites were registered B&N released a new device called "Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight Technology". That’s just too improbable, so clearly B&N considered calling the new device the Nook Glow. I’m glad they didn’t; I predicted they would not and it would have been embarrassing if I’d been wrong.

On the other hand, Nook Glow is less of a mouthful than "Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight Technology". It’s also easier to say than "the all new Nook Simple Touch", which is technically what this year old eReader is named.
