Simon & Schuster to Offer Sampler as eBook, App

Free Press, a Simon & Schuster imprint, has just released an ebook sampler. This publishing house plans to release 5 titles this summer, and they’ve put together the sampler to act as a teaser. You can find the ebook in a number of ebookstores including Amazon, B&N.

But I’m more interested in the app, which you can find in iTunes. The app, which I’m still in the process of downloading, is supposed to have video and audio content. It’s also described as being interactive.

The books are set in very different settings,  from the wilds of British Columbia in Shelter, the icy shores of Sweden in Some Kind of Peace, to a colonial settlement in Gone to the Forest, the majerstic Himalayas in The Folded Earth, and the Welsh countryside in The Other Half of Me.

Free Press is always looking for innovative ways to promote our authors and reach new readers.  These five novels represent a wealth of talent and entertainment. We hope this app will showcase our authors in a new way and broaden their audience,” said Martha K. Levin, Free Press EVP and Publisher.

The sampler app takes advantage of the varied settings and includes behind-the-scenes content, photos to help set the background of the novels, character sketches, author interviews, and book trailers as well as other videos.

The app was created in house at Free Press using Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite, including the Folio Builder and Overlay Creator tools in Adobe InDesign. They allow for rich, interactive elements such as video, audio, slideshows, pan/zoom images, web content and more to be built into the app. In case you were wondering, this app shares a number of basic layout details with many of the magazines you may have read.  Wired, for example,  was likely built using the same tools.

Given that the app is free, it’s definitely worth a download.
