Kobo for Android Updated

Late last week Kobo announced an imminent launch in Japan, but lost amid the hubbub was an update to the Kobo for Android app which is adds new menu design, metadata, and page layout.

Kobo has totally revamped the interface, and the new design allows users to easily go from one part of the app to another. This app offers an updated reading menu and page layout, and it will also now let you rate the ebooks in your library.

And as you can see from the image above, the app now supports a 2 column mode when reading an ebook in landscape mode. This is a feature that has been available for the Kobo iPad for quite some time now, and it was also recently added to the Kindle Android app. This will finally make the Kobo app useful to read in a mode other that portrait.

You might have to be a reading aesthete to care, but I’ve never liked reading a wide line of text. I’ve found that trying to keep my place from one line to the next grew more difficult as the width increases. There are studies which have also shown that it’s not the easiest way to read, either, so clearly I’m not alone in this.

Column widths:
I used to be really interested in typography, etc – back when I was doing a bit of self-employed desktop-publishing work a long time ago (15-20 years). I recall reading that various studies had found that column widths in the range of 50-70 characters provided, in general, the best reading experience.

Can you turn off the obnoxious social reading features? Can you stop it from trying to download your entire library? The previous version I tried got uninstalled almost immediately. And if those things haven’t changed, I’m not trying it again.
