Eleventy-Bajillion Kindle Fires Coming this Fall

If the reason you’ve been holding off on getting the Kindle Fire was that you didn’t like the Henry Ford-esque color selection then I have some good news for you. According to a senior manager at Staples, Amazon plans to have the Kindle Fire take up 6 spots in his inventory this fall.

Reuters is reporting this morning that Demos Parneros, the President of U.S. Retail for Staples, told them that Amazon plans to have not less than 6 new SKUs assigned to Kindle models this fall. Sadly, that doesn’t mean there will be 6 new and different Kindle Fires, just that they’ll be listed 6 times. On the upside, Demos did also indicate that at least one of the SKus will go to a 10″ Kindle Fire (we can only hope).

Now, some blogs are reporting that this means we’ll see Kindle Fires with differing amounts of storage, different screen sizes, and more, but that’s not completely true.  While we could see more options for storage, all we really know from today’s news is that we’ll see Amazon’s tablet be listed 6 more times in the Staples database. What’s the difference?

Let me give you a few examples of why a device might get a new SKU but not be a new device. If Amazon took the current Kindle Fire and rereleased it as part of a gaming bundle, that bundle would get a new SKU. The same would be true if Amazon offered a Valentine’s Day bundle, or added a case.

And I cracked a joke about seeing the Kindle Fire in several colors because if they existed each of those KFs would be listed under a different SKU.

Don’t be surprised if the real announcement doesn’t live up to some of the hype today; today’s news is more about Staples stock management system than it is about the upcoming Kindle Fire.

I’m going to needlessly speculate that there will be a 7 inch, a 10 inch, an 8 gig and a 16 gig giving four different fire models. The other two models will be e-ink kindles. That’s what I think anyway.

I think you’re correct about the first models being screen and gigabyte size variations, only I think the other two models would be the 3g versions of each screen size.

And I think they may go with 5″ as the alternative screen size instead of a 10″.
