Pocketbook now Working on a Frontlight-Equipped eReader – Should Hit the Market in 2013

IFA-Berlin has just wrapped up and one of the surprise exhibits was found in the Pocketbook booth. They are working on a new ereader prototype based around LG Display’s HD E-ink screen. It’s still in the breadboard stage, but as you can see in the video it also has a frontlight.

Okay, what with Kobo and Amazon each announcing a new ereader with frontlight and HD screen, this bit of news isn’t nearly as interesting as it was when I found it last week. But it’s still worth a post because it shows that Pocketbook is not yet completely out of the ereader market.

The video was shot by the Russian gadget blog Ferra.ru, as you can tel from the voiceover. According to the related article, Pocketbook plans to release this ereader in 2013, which would put them about 2 to 3 months behind the Kobo Glo and the Kindle Paperwhite. It would also make Pocketbook the 4th company to release a similar product; the Chinese ereader maker Onyx is expecting to ship the front-light equipped i62HD in late September.
