More Details Leaked/Invented for Google’s $99 Nexus Tablet

Digitimes is back again today with more details from "industry sources" concerning Google’s hypothetical $99 Nexus tablet. When I last covered this story a few weeks ago, I knew nothing more than the rumored price. Now Digitims is making claims about the display, CPU, and the company involved in assembling the tablet:

The US$99 Nexus tablet is equipped with an ARM-architecture single-core processor 8950 developed by China-based WonderMedia Technologies, and a HUVA TN panel made by Taiwan-based HannStar Display, the sources said. The tablet will be produced by Taiwan-based Quanta Computer.

As much as I’m pretty sure that Google has a $99 tablet in the works, I’m not so sure that this particular rumor is true. I’ve had my hands on a tablet based around a WonderMedia 8950 chip. For a budget tablet it was nice, but it still felt underpowered when compared to any of the dual core tablets out there.

The thing about the 8950 chip is that it has about the same specs and performance as the many budget tablets I reviewed this Spring. It is also priced so it can be sold in a $99 tablet at a profit and that makes me doubt that Google use it in a Nexus tablet. The Nexus 7 is sold at a loss and I expect the same of the new Nexus 7 Lite.

Don’t get me wrong, this chip can make a very nice budget tablet. But the Nexus 7 is using a next-gen Tegra 3 CPU and costs only $200. If Google’s new tablet really runs on the 8950 chip it will look ridiculously underpowered.

Unless, of course, WonderMedia surprises us with a dual core design based on the 8950 chip.  While I don’t know any rumors to support this it is not out of the question.

What about the 8850 CPU? Not even listed on their site but here is the indefatigable Charbax showing a small tablet with it and the performance does not seem to stutter:
