I’m in Las Vegas for CES 2013
I’m back in my hotel room from my first partial day in LV, and I thought I’d take a moment to tell everyone I’m in Las Vegas again (it slipped my mind). This is my 4th CES.
I’m back now from the opening night event, CES Unveiled. There was not much to report on in terms of ereader or ebook news, but I did get to spend a few minutes playing with a lot of toys (reason #2 for going to CES). I also spent a few minutes playing with the XO-4 laptop Marvell had on their table.
This is the latest model XO laptop, and it was announced earlier this year. This model adds an IR touchscreen, HDMI port, and faster dual-core CPU, but otherwise looks identical to the original XO-1. It’s expected to ship with either 1GB or 2GB of RAM and 4GB or 8GB of storage. Prototype units were shipped to a limited number of testers a couple months ago, and one was kind enough to show the XO-4 was capable of displaying Kindle ebooks:
That was a fun device to play with, but it still felt not quite finished. It was also fun to correct the Marvell rep who was demoing it. (I knew more about it than he did.) On a related note, I was told that OLPC will be making some announcement about it this week. I could not get any details from Marvell on whether any units had been ordered, or when they would leave the factory, but I suspect that is what OLPC is going to talk about.
Update: OLPC is now saying that the XO-4 will cost $206 when ordered in quantities of 20,000. It’s expected to start mass production in March of this year.

Have fun! Might want to take some Airborne or ZiCam before the flight back. Everyone on the east coast seems to have the flu, including me., and planes are flying germ lockers.

So, impoverished kids have access to HDTVs? Wut.
Check out ALL the 8″-class tablets. Alcatel has one. This will be the year of the 8″, I think, to battle the iPad Mini. 7″ will begin to wane, I think.

I’ve covered this before at some length.
The HDMI port was added so teachers can connect the XO-4 to a projector. With earlier model XOs they were using a USB to HDMI converter.

Fine then. Play the teacher card (although the price is being offloaded to *every student*, whereas the adapter is the school’s wallet). Now go seek out all those eight-inch tablets. See if Vizio is showing theirs and if Alcatel’s is out for fondling. And confirm resolution of the eight-inch from Coby too. Chop chop!

There won’t be much in the way of additional cost; the XO has 4 SUB ports and the HDMI port replaces one. I seriously doubt that the kinds will be impacted.
