Acer Confirms the Iconia B1-A71 – Priced to Compete With the Kindle Fire

Acer’s rumored budget tablet has made another appearance today and this time it’s official. Acer has confirmed the details which leaked in December, including the FCC paperwork and benchmarks.

This is going be a dual core CPU tablet running Android 4.1 on a Mediatek CPU, and it has a VGA webcam on the front. Some sources are describing the B1 as a competitor to the Nexus 7, but I don’t see it that way.

The Iconia B1-A71 boasts:

  • Jelly Bean
  • 1.2GHz dual-core processor
  • 7-inch display (1024 x 600)
  • 8GB of internal storage
  • WiFI 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • microSD support up to 32GB
  • Front-facing 0.3 MP camera

This tablet is too underspecced to be considered a serious alternative to the Nexus 7; I think it is better to see it in terms of the second gen Kindle Fire. When compared to that tablet, it could be argued that the B1 is the better deal.

Sven-inch tablets are dead. Bring on the eight-inchers.

I don’t know. I want to grasp my tablet with one hand and 6 inches is too wide for me.

Although, I see Padlette has come out a strap for smaller tablets.

??? Six inches? That’s the size of eInk readers. Even 7″ isn’t that big. And have you held an iPad Mini. It’s so light it doesn’t take any strength to hold one-handed, and that’s just about 8″.

I owned a Archos 101 briefly which is a very narrow 9.7 inch tablet due to its 16:10 aspect ratio. Its dimensions are

10.65 x 5.91 x 0.47 inches , so a shade under 6 inches in width.

While I could grasp it with one hand, it was difficult.

I see the Apple mini is 5.3 inches wide. So maybe that would be fine.
